If the dealer deals you a high hand or some sort of jackpot, you’re definitely going to want to tip them a portion of that. Regarding the amount you should tip, it is completely up to you. In most casinos, dealers pool their tips and split them. If you want to know whether your dealer gets to keep tips, or has to pool them, just ask. Some players will tip a bit more generously knowing that the money is going directly into their dealer’s pockets. Pooling tips is a policy that makes sense for casinos. Why are casino dealer tips called ’tokes?’ Tips are the grease that lubricate the gears of Las Vegas casinos. Seasoned gamblers know “toking,” or tipping, is a great way to not only thank dealers for their stellar service, but they also ensure a dealer will watch your back (and your bets) during your play so you’ll get the most from your. Many casino workers get the majority of their salary from tips. This is the way it is for those employed in the service industry. Most table game players will tip the dealers while they are playing by making a bet for them. Some will just tip their dealer when they leave the game.
I’ve honestly been shocked to find out that some people don’t understand the concept of tipping. If you were to ask your local waiter or waitress their opinion, it’s likely you’d get a variety of answers.
A ‘Service job’ is a position of employment where a good percentage of your salary is derived from tips given to you by the people you serve. The concept is that it’s up to the customer to determine how worthy of payment a business’s service is by tipping the staff.
Tipping is a bit democratic, as it allows you to vote, or put the decision in your hands as to whether the service was poor, acceptable, or excellent. Traditionally, tips are given directly to the recipient in cash. In gambling houses and taverns of the prohibition area, it was illegal to operate a casino atmosphere. People employed by the crime families were compensated directly by the patrons.
There are still many service jobs where the tips make up over half to all a worker’s salary. Anywhere you’re getting excellent service from another individual; it’s your social responsibility to hit their hand with a little cash.Tipping says “Thank You”
If you’ve ever been given a free drink by a bartender or server, the only logical response is to thank them; and what better way to say “thank you” than with a little extra cash? Have you ever tended to a bar, or served as a ‘cocktail girl’? If you haven’t, take a moment to think about what each day looks like for them. They likely deal with irrationally angry customers on a regular basis, they collect a minuscule wage, they have to rush around like chickens with their head cut off for hours a day, and yet they still do their best to ensure you have a pleasant experience during your stay. Doesn’t that sound like someone that deserves a “thank you” in monetary form?
The idea overall is that their pay is generated a few chips or dollars at a time. It’s your responsibility as a good customer to give the staff a tip based on their service. A few dollars are really all that’s expected, but why not make someone’s day once and a while? Giving a $20+ tip is sure to turn someone’s day around, so why not be the guy to make someone’s day?
To be given anything for free nowadays is huge, as most of the greedy players out there abused the systems to the point of its current restrictions. If you tip, you’re feeding the positive energy of society, a social karma if you will. There’s no better way to say “thank you”, or “I appreciate that,” than giving someone a little cash.General Tipping / Casino & Service WaitstaffCan You Tip Casino Dealers
There are a few established tipping practices out there, but I’ve developed some of my own from experience. Now, I’m not really what you would call a high roller, and can’t tip $1,000 for a well-cooked steak, but I’ll send back 20% if the food and service are on point. Free drinks get a $2 minimum, maybe a $5 chip if I’m feeling generous.
In some poker rooms, there are chair massages offered, and if you don’t tip for that, then you probably don’t belong to any club or public gathering space. The whole point is not to be cheap; if you can afford to be in a luxury hotel or participating in something as squandering as gambling, you need to tip every single staff member that’s providing you service.
Does that mean you slip the security guard a Benjamin for the asking you to tone down your drunken yelling of “everybody wins” when the black dealer busts? Maybe. The better time to tip him might be when you’re trying to get into the clubs that have the 2:1 ratio of girls to guys. The point is you should be tipping, how much and when are entirely up to you.
It’s important to keep cash in your pocket and not leave anyone out, such as when you’re getting spa services outside of the casino, maybe a massage, a fancy tattoo, or even a haircut. Think generously about your taxi, hotel maid, and anyone involved with your gambling trip. If you have money to gamble, you have money to tip for every service related to your session.Poker Dealers & Strategic Tipping
If a poker dealer is crushing it, and you’re having a winning session, you should throw the dealer a few bucks before they leave, or before you leave. Times that are good to tip are when you take down a huge pot or when you’re cashing out to exit the table.
If a dealer pushes for the best interest of the game, tipping is an excellent way to reinforce the actions and activities you want to see more of in return. Tipping your dealer is a great way to let them know that you enjoyed the service they’ve provided.
Strategic tipping is the tipping of other players at the poker table. Let’s say you’ve had 1 or 2 gin and tonics over your social limit. You’re a little buzzed, maybe a little slurry or loud, but by no means is it an episode of cops. If you think you might be annoying the other players at the table, try tipping them. Peeling off some of your chip stack and rolling everyone a $5 chip across the table can be a classy gesture, just be careful to make sure it’s in line with the poker house rules.Tipping Your Blackjack Dealers
I’ve tipped a lot of black dealers in the past, because I’ve spent numerous hours playing blackjack. I can tell you that they appreciate tips, just as much as any other service worker. The best times to leave the dealer a tip is when you cash out or color up.
I also like to “play” with the dealer’s tips as well. Some casinos won’t let you do this, but if it’s okay in your local casino, I recommend trying it out. What you do is leave a tip (usually like $1 chip or something), and you put it to the side of your bet. If you win that hand of blackjack, then the dealer would win double their tip bet. They still get the bet if you lose, but it feels like they were still rooting for you or something.
It’s also customary to throw the dealer a tip if you hit a huge hand, or if you won a large hand through a seemingly successful outcome. Like, for example, the dealer draws six cards to bust, and you had the biggest bet of the night at stake. In that moment of feeling good, you should let the dealer in on the fun as well.Slot Jackpots
It’s not as common to tip anyone for a slot machine jackpot, as there isn’t much of a service element. Buying the staff that helps process your win a drink or something is usually a nice gesture. Maybe some unlucky guy was sitting next to you when you hit your jackpot. Throwing him a few bucks, telling him it was because he’s good luck or something, that’s not going to hurt anything. How Much Should You Tip Casino DealersSummary
I’m not telling you to tip all your money away until you’re broke, just make sure to budget for the personal service fees that are associated with the things you’re already planning on paying for or buying. You should tip service workers in any establishment, but more so those in the gambling industry. It’s the socially accepted norm, it will make you look classy, it feels good, and if you’ve ever held a service job you know it’s the right thing to do.Do You Tip Casino Dealers
Tipping is optional… if you’re okay with getting dirty looks and getting called out by other patrons for being cheap. We now live in a world where tipping really isn’t that optional anymore ifyou want to have an enjoyable experience. Brick-and-mortar casinos are no exception.
The problem, though, is that most people who aren’t casino regulars aren’t sure who tip, when to tip, and how much to tip.
I’ve got good news for you. I spend way too much time at the casino and have a lot of friends who work in the industry. What I’m hopefully going to be able to do today is give you a quickbreakdown of the “proper” tipping rules that you should be following to ensure a great casino experience.
I put proper in quotes because tipping is still optional and is always done at your discretion. While these guidelines are great to follow, you’re free to do whatever you want. Don’t ever letanyone tell you anything different. The important thing to take note of is that the tipping guidelines and accepted practices are going to be different depending on which game you are playing.
What I’ve done below is break things up by the most popular casino games. Feel free to read through all of the different tips for every game, or flip straight to your favorite game.
